The activity that turns spectators into participants — and they stop wanting to sit back down.

For the Viduramžiai LT team, running events since 2004, axe and spear throwing is one of those activities that instantly shifts the mood of a party: within minutes, spectators turn into eager competitors. It revives the throwing craft of medieval warriors while turning it into a safe, accessible activity that works equally well at weddings, corporate parties and public city events.

We use axes and spears specially balanced for throwing, matching historical prototypes in shape and weight – this is not toy gear, but real, carefully chosen equipment that lets guests feel an authentic sense of weight and balance in hand. Targets are wooden, and the whole setup is built so attention stays on technique, not on risk.

From the first tip to a throw that lands

Every participant starts with a short briefing from the instructor: how to hold the axe or spear, how to execute the rotation, and how to judge the right distance to the target. Success here comes down to correct rotation, distance perception, wrist motion and a feel for the centre of weight – not raw strength. That is exactly why the activity suits physically strong guests and less athletic ones equally well.

Once the basics click, we like to move into accuracy competitions – a mini-tournament format where participants (or teams) compete for the most precise hit on the target. This format works especially well at corporate events and stag/hen parties, where shared excitement and friendly rivalry matter more than any individual score.

The number of instructors scales with the group: a smaller group needs just one experienced instructor, while a larger one gets several, so every participant receives individual coaching and feedback before each throw, not just a general briefing at the start.

Only two people stand in the zone — and that never bends

Safety here is not a formality – it is the core condition without which the activity simply does not run. The throwing zone is clearly separated from the spectator area, and only the instructor and the current thrower are ever inside it at any given moment – no one else enters until that throw is complete. This one-thrower-at-a-time rule lets the instructor fully control every action and immediately flag imprecise technique.

Where it fits — and who it isn't for

This is fundamentally an outdoor activity – it works best on a flat outdoor field with a safe zone roughly 10–15 metres long in front of the targets. That distance keeps both the thrower and onlookers comfortable and safe. We organize it indoors far less often, and only when the space is genuinely large and meets every safety requirement – so when planning your event, an outdoor location is always the first and most reliable choice.

We recommend the activity for adults and older teenagers under parental supervision. For younger children, the weight of the axe or spear and the safety-technique demands can make the activity too demanding – in that case we suggest choosing one of our gentler active-fun options instead.

Why teams remember it — and book us again

Accuracy competitions reveal a lot about group dynamics – some participants go quiet and focused after a missed throw, others laugh it off, and the outcome often comes down to who listens best to the instructor rather than who is physically strongest. That is exactly why this activity tends to become one of the most talked-about moments of an event – guests cheer each other on, film the attempts, and remember for a long time who managed to hit dead centre.

We can shape the activity as a short, drop-in format where guests try it between other parts of the event, or as a longer, structured programme with a proper accuracy tournament and a winner's moment. Either way, instructors adapt to the event's pace and guest count so the activity runs smoothly, without queues or dead time.

Over more than twenty years in the events market, we have delivered this activity for well-known Lithuanian companies, municipalities and private clients across the country, from Vilnius to Klaipėda and Kaunas. We often pair axe and spear throwing with other medieval-themed activities – a knights' show, archery and crossbow shooting, or medieval music – to give the whole event a coherent, history-rich feel.

The answers people need most

Is axe and spear throwing safe?

Yes, the activity is fully safe when instructor guidance is followed. The throwing zone is clearly separated from spectators, and only the instructor and the current thrower are inside it at any time. Targets are wooden, and the axes and spears are specially balanced for throwing, so risk stays minimal. Instructors monitor the process continuously and pause the activity if they notice unsafe technique or behaviour.

From what age can someone throw axes or spears?

We recommend it for adults and older teenagers under parental supervision. For younger children, the weight of the gear and the safety-technique demands can make the activity too difficult and risky. If younger children are attending your event, we recommend one of our gentler active-fun activities for them and keeping axe throwing for the adult and teen programme.

What space does this activity need?

A flat outdoor area with a safe zone roughly 10–15 metres long in front of the targets is required. This is primarily an outdoor activity. We organize it indoors less often, and only when the space is exceptionally large and meets every safety requirement – so we recommend planning a suitable outdoor spot in advance.

Does axe throwing require great physical strength?

No, strength is not the deciding factor. Whether an axe or spear sticks in the target depends on correct rotation, distance perception, wrist motion and a feel for the centre of weight, not on the force of the throw. That is why the activity suits men and women equally well, along with less athletic guests – the result comes down to technique, which is learned within minutes.

How many instructors supervise the process?

Depending on the number of participants, we assign one or several experienced instructors. A smaller group needs just one; a larger group gets several, so every participant gets individual attention and coaching before each throw. Instructors continuously monitor the throwing zone and make sure safety rules are followed throughout the activity.

Sincere thanks for the professional service at our all-male company celebration. Although axe throwing seemed difficult at first, the instructor's advice helped us pick up the technique quickly. It turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of the evening.

Justas L.

We want to sincerely thank you for organizing such a safe and enjoyable activity. Even the women on our team bravely tried spear throwing and were thrilled with it! A great way to test yourself in a completely different field.
