Shadow Theatre

Shadow theatre is a stage technique in which performers' bodies, moving behind a lit screen, become recognisable silhouettes: a city skyline, an animal, a couple embracing, or a symbolic scene from someone's life. No make-up, masks or heavy props — just body movement precisely synced to light and music. A layered video projection on the same screen completes the silhouettes and creates images the body alone could never form: clouds, stars, text or animated elements. That combination — live choreography plus layered projection — is exactly what sets it apart from classic shadow puppetry with static puppets or hand shadows.

Because the story is told through image and music rather than words, the show works equally well for children, adults and international guests — there is no language barrier at all. The emotion comes from movement, rhythm and sound, so the audience stays gripped without understanding a single spoken word, because none are used. That is exactly why the format so often becomes the highlight of the evening — guests never know what will appear on the screen next, and together with the soundtrack the performance feels like one continuous, live-performed piece.

Every shadow theatre performance is written from scratch for a specific event. At corporate parties, the silhouettes often recreate a brand logo or a recognisable building outline; at company anniversaries, a timeline of achievements. At weddings, we usually tell the story of how the couple met or their path to the altar, while at children's parties the silhouettes turn into fairy-tale characters, animals or forest scenes. Before the event we discuss the theme with you, and our choreographers work with the technical team to sync movement, light and projection into one continuous story lasting a few minutes.

For clients who want to reveal even more of how the illusion is built, we also offer an interactive format: part of the audience gets to see the process itself — the performers' silhouettes and the technical work — directly, without the usual screen concealment. This option is popular for events that want to do more than just watch a show, for example educational programmes or team-building events where guests want to understand how the illusion actually works.

Shadow theatre is positioned as one of the “cleanest” stage formats available: no smoke, no fire, no noise — every bit of the audience's attention stays on a single lit screen. That makes it suitable even for enclosed, tightly seated venues where fire or smoke effects would be inappropriate for fire-safety reasons or simply too close to guests. A standard performance needs enough width for the screen and a similar depth behind it for the performers to move freely; we confirm the exact area against your specific stage or hall. The screen itself is mobile, so we adapt it to fit anything from a small café hall to a large concert arena.

We bring the full technical set-up ourselves as part of the service: the frame, the screen, and professional lighting and video equipment. You don't need to worry about mounting the screen or dialling in the lights — that is entirely our team's responsibility. On-site assembly and light calibration usually take about 1–2 hours; we time it so the performance itself becomes a pleasant surprise for your guests rather than a visible part of the set-up work. Extra power capacity is rarely required — we confirm this individually based on the venue and the scope of the programme.

Shadow theatre works beautifully as a stand-alone highlight, but it also combines with our other acts — interactive projections, an LED show with glowing costumes, or a laser show choreography. Together these technologies form our illusion spectacle Dream X, in which shadows, light and movement tell one continuous story from opening to finale. Viduramžiai LT has been staging performances since 2004 and travels to any location in Lithuania — from an intimate wedding to a large city event.

An outdoor performance is possible, but only after full darkness and in calm weather — strong wind can shift the screen and disrupt the picture, so we usually schedule the outdoor version as the finale after an indoor part of the programme. If your event is outdoors, we work out the technical details in advance — how the screen is anchored, the light source, and a backup plan for bad weather — so the day runs smoothly even if conditions change.
